5 Tiny Tableau Tips

“Tiny Tips” are my favorite sort of tips for any tool. I love tips and tricks that seem small at first but end up saving hours over time. Here are 5 tips I’ve learned while using Tableau:

1. Make sense of containers

Double Clicking on the top handle of an object in a dashboard will select the container it’s in!

2. Leverage the calculation side panel

If you’re trying to untangle calcs, clicking on the calculated field will display its definition in the side panel

3. Keep your notes in your workbook

You can use dashboards with text objects in them to keep notes for yourself — one less application to switch between when developing a dashboard.

4. Drag and Drop Everything

“Tableau is as easy and as difficult as drag and drop” — Nicholas Pillsbury (@NicholasPillsb2), on many occasions. A lesser known drag and drop function — dragging fields inside the calculation window!

5. Easy Data Prep

One of your favorite Excel data transformations is hiding in plain sight. To split a column, simply right click, transform, custom split, and configure your delimiter and columns to get new fields.
